Day 13 Lisbon

Well this day looked less than promising so I went back to bed while dh hit the computer to earn some euros.
Morning Fog

It eventually lightened up and we decided to head downtown by getting a one day transit pass.(3.50euro each) We both love the idea of being able to hop on any and all buses, trams and metros. It gives us some sense of control (not that control is important to either of us!!!) but also allowing the openendedness I like in traveling. Be in the moment, go with the flow and get on the nearest tram. We started our walk down the hill, not quite sure where about our path but knowing we had done this in other countries. We passed old buildings

and bits of untold stories

Final days

We were headed for the Laranjieras Metro stop and when I saw this sign, I knew we were on the right path. Now just to find the magic M on a building or signpost.
Sete Rios

We made it and then stood bewildered at the machine. My bits of understanding Portuguese were no use. Fortunately, a young woman spotted our blank faces and came over and helped us buy the one way ticket we needed to get started. We were never sure whether we could get the one day pass at this station but it didn't matter. We were on our way!
Laranjieras
(I am always getting grief about going up to strangers and offering help or advice...when I see someone looking touristy and lost. This was good karmic payback imho...) Interesting boots on one young woman
Snazzy boots

We hit the ground running, or at least walking as quickly as we could on the stone cobbles.
Largo do Chiado
And Eureka!
# 28 Carreira
we see the 28 Tram - this one gives a great sightseeing jaunt through Lisbon. Once we saw the tram we continued walking, trying to find the Opera House, but get slightly distracted.
Who has a run in her tights..?

Diligently reading our maps, we think we found the street despite drizzle.

National Theater
As the ticket office is closed, lunch is not being served on the lovely courtyard, we mush on. Is it too early for lunch? will we find another bar to have a coffee? We spot a promising cafe in the Museum ...but alas it's closed due to renovations.
Sadly it was closed...
Down a hill we trudge, not really sure of where we are but optimistic, hopeful. Aha! we spot the tram again

...and decide this is a place to look for lunch and hope for clearing skies or at least not a downpour. When we come out there is a break in the weather and we see the Lisbon of dreams..
Blue sky, red roofs

And the clearer skies allowed us a view of the full moon and a lovely Lisbon at night.
