Dover Castle - the war years

We managed to actually find the castle with no problem, and drove up the long, winding hill. Dover Castle is located on an amazing promontory overlooking the English Channel. Oh those castle builders always knew...location, location, location.

We started off our visit by touring the Secret War Tunnels built many, many years and wars before WWII - started in the Middle Ages in fact. Because no photography is allowed, you will have to take my word (and those in the link) that it was fascinating to see the rooms and tunnels furnished with antiques - some actually from those rooms and others pieces of the same vintage. It was like stepping back in time, esp with the soundtrack of bombings and doctors and medics shouting to each other in the hospital theaters. If you like modern history, this is a wonderful stop.

Back outside, we strolled around and then went to lunch at the NAAFI restaurant. It was really good to sit down again!

Adm. Ramsay
Admiral Ramsay was responsible for the amazing rescue efforts at Dunkirk and is truly an unsung hero. This can be read by clicking and looking at original size.
