Day 12 Getting oriented in Lisbon

With a night filled with booms of thunder, we slept well. The natural noise added to the normal Rain setting we have on our sound-machine. I didn't expect to see sun, but I had hoped for a bit of a view. Well this is a bit.

Dh returned with tea for me to report that there were sights you never see in a Marriott, included bathrooms flooded and a sea of water on some marble floors. We realized the rain had been very serious.

By the time we got ourselves together, we decided to explore our own neighborhood and see if there were any interesting places to eat or shop. We had already noticed how steep the hills were..shades of San Francisco or Amman. We headed up towards the University thinking that there are always interesting spots if there are students.
We found our direction by noting our street

Coffee seemed inviting but we had only been walking for about 10 minutes so we passed.

We found the dining hall, but we weren't dining

and we think this is an Admin building.

Since there was more rain than drizzle now, we headed across campus to the Torre de Tombo, the Archives. An extremely modern building, it had a few very old items on the ground floor where we were allowed to visit. (Researchers went elsewhere.) This treaty was on display- the paperwork for entry into the EU

We also thoroughly enjoyed the exhibit of photographs by Antonio Meneres, which showed a not so distant Portugal. Exposição: António Menéres, Dos Anos do Inquérito à Arquitectura Regional Portuguesa

Continuing our walk north, we saw the aftermath of the rain...flooding and serious damage. This cavein was near the underpass at Campo Grande.
and the underpass was flooded

and always the crew that watches.

We needed coffee!
Well, make that lunch.

Thus fortified, we were set to seriously start learning about Lisboa.
Get In The Car will now take a break with the rest of the story to follow on February 26.
