Lunch at Jaen

Lunch at Parador de Jaen

The tourist office in Madrid strongly suggested we try to stop here on our way through Spain. The view of Jaen as one approached was awesome, clarifying the importance of the site as a fortified one in the struggles between the Moors and Christians years ago.

It was quite a drive up through the city, but it was a lovely sunny Saturday and we were not alone in lunching here. We decided on the set menu of local specialties. First came olives and a glass of sherry.

There was also a little ‘amuse bouche’ which we ate too quickly to photograph. They seemed like little potato pancakes, very crispy. Starters were Gazpacho with all the fixings for dh. I wonder if homes have individual gazpacho plates??

I had the grilled asparagus and they were delicious. I’m not sure what the two sauces were, tho the orange may have been mango.

Our entrees were pork cheeks with vegetables, and stuffed sea bream with a potato sauce and topped with crispy fried lavender..

Now a deep breath while we decided on dessert. Dh was taking half his entrée home (to our villa) but he managed to finish his ice cream with roasted pine nuts, topped with a bit of caramel, and I had a bowl of fresh fruit in sour orange juice. The dish was really deep and I ended up full before I finished.

Two coffee con leches and we were ready to go; this ‘big splurge’ lunch was about 70Euros and well worth the experience and the excellent service and style.

Then it was back to... Get in the car…
